Service to remember Srebrenica genocide

-

A SERVICE to mark Srebrenica Memorial Week will be held in Leicester Cathedral on Thursday July 14 at 5.30pm.

Open to all, it will reflect on the 21st anniversary of the genocide of 8,372 Bosnian Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica who were murdered on account of their Islamic faith.

Similar events are to be held nationwide.

Bishop of Leicester, the Right Reverend Martyn Snow said: “It is important for our city and county to mark this tragic anniversary and in particular for Christians and Muslims to stand together in a common commitment to peace in our communities. Srebrenica reminds us that no part of the world can take peace for granted and no one can be neutral in the face of evil.”

In a separate statement Bishop Martyn said: “During this past week we have witnessed a number of horrifying attacks in Baghdad, Dhaka, Qatif and Medina.

“The fact that some of these attacks have targeted Muslims during the fasting month of Ramadan makes them even more distressing. What should be a time both of family celebration and increased worship has instead become one of mourning and sadness.

“We also remember Shaymanonda Das, a Hindu Priest who was killed at a temple in Bangladesh.

“We will continue to remember the victims of these, and other terrorist attacks, in our prayers.

“The Church of England in Leicester remains determined to work together with all people of peace for the good of all.”
