Boys triumph in schools contest
A TEAM of young footballers from Desford is celebrating after bagging silverware following successes over local rivals in a recent schools’ competition.
The Year 5 and 6 boys - aged between 10 and 11 - represented Desford Community Primary School in the Benny Clinton Memorial football tournament - running out as eventual winners.
The annual event, organised by Desford’s near neighbours Newbold Verdon Primary School, was set up in memory of the hosts’ former headteacher and, this year, saw a number of school teams from Hinckley and Bosworth compete for the coveted trophy.
The eight-strong Desford contingent saw off the challenges of Barlestone and the home side itself in the group stages before eliminating a team representing Groby’s Lady Jane Grey Primary Academy in the semi-final.
The trophy was secured following a nail-biting final against Market Bosworth’s St Peter’s Academy which saw the Kirkby Road school maintain its unbeaten run on the day and seal a 2-1 victory.
Desford Primary’s sports coach Dan Chapman said: “The boys played brilliantly throughout. They deserved to win the trophy. Well done to St Peter’s for making the final such a competitive and entertaining finish to a brilliant tournament and thanks to everyone at Newbold Verdon.”
