Police hunt for man on the run from jail

-

A THUG who slit the throat of another man during a Hinckley brawl is on the run from prison.

Gavin Owens was jailed for the attack on Steven Wakefield following the incident in the town centre.

Suffolk Police are appealing for help in tracing the prisoner who absconded overnight from a facility in Hollesley Bay, near Woodbridge.

Police were contacted around 8.40am on Monday morning reporting Owens, 33, as missing.

The last confirmed sighting of him at the prison was at 11pm on Sunday night.

Owens was serving an indeterminate sentence for attempted murder, GBH and ABH after the incident on December 30 2008.

Owens, also known as Gavin Burrell, is described as white, around 5ft 11in, of medium build, with green eyes and very short brown hair.

He has several tattoos including a Celtic band on his right upper arm.

Police have stressed he has links to the Hinckley area.

They are asking anyone who may have seen him or anyone with information about where he is now to contact officers - warning you should not approach him or take any further action.

A spokesman said: “If you can help, please contact Suffolk Police or your nearest police station using the national police number 101.”

The attack happened after a brawl erupted outside the Dog and Gun pub, on Mansion Street at about 3.50am on December 30 2008.

Steven Wakefield was punched in the face by Owens, causing him to bang his head on the ground and lose consciousness, where he was then attacked by two others.

He was later hunted down and driven into by a Jeep driven by his attackers at a taxi rank, knocking him to the ground where he then had his throat slit by Owens.
