THOUSANDS of people packed Hollycroft Park for a Sunday Funday at the weekend.

Hosted by the Friends of Hollycroft Park, the event ran all afternoon and saw up to 2,000 people make use of free fun, games, sports, crafts and musical entertainment.

Youngsters had the chance to learn circus skills and create colourful mementoes in the Friends’ party tent.

There were cheerleading demonstrations, a display of vintage bikes and the chance to learn to play bowls and tennis under tuition of members of town clubs.

Strolling jazz musicians kept crowds entertained and Punch and Judy shows proved a novelty to many young visitors.

The event was opened by Hinckley and Bosworth borough councillor Mark Nickerson who, with his wife, spent most of the afternoon touring stalls, stands and activities.

With no admission charge and most activities offered for free, the event was organised primarily for community benefit.

Refreshments were sold by the Friends to raise money towards a new party tent to replace the existing one which is coming to the end of its useful life.

Friends chairman Dawn Jeffrey said: “It was amazing, absolutely amazing.

“It was so well supported.

“We must have had up to 2,000 people through the park.”

She said thanks were due to the borough council for its support, including the provision of a member of staff for the day.

Friends member Margaret Parker said thanks were also due to all the volunteers who set up and cleared away, Hollycroft bowlers, members of Hinckley Tennis Club, musicians who led free jam and play sessions and stall holders.

Organisers hope that charity stalls, which were among the stands, also benefited from the day.
