THERE was a winning double for Andy Stewart who won both the Wednesday and Thursday open matches at Higham Lane Fishery.

In what was the final evening match of the series, Andy float fished sweetcorn to land 58lb 3oz of carp to 8lb. Dean Hughes at the other end of the lake came second with 55lb 2oz while Ricky Arms finished third with 52lb 6oz. Andy did the “double” with a 65lb catch again on float fished sweetcorn tactics to win Thursday’s event. Herb Albert came second with 61lb 7oz with John Varley in third with a 60lb 9oz catch.

There was another big turnout for Maynes Lakes midweek open match with plenty of fish feeding in the warm weather. Leading the way was Dick Rowling who pole fished paste to land 77lb 8oz of carp. Pool One winner was John Newton with a 48lb catch. Karl Downing won Pool 2 with 34lb 4oz while Dick Rowling topped Pool Three.

The final of Measham’s Wednesday evening series produced a father and son battle. Drawn next to each other on the Globe length at Snarestone, son Ian Baker came out a comfortabl­e winner, landing a superb 17lb 9oz catch of bream to win the final. Dad Phil Baker finished second with another bream catch weighing 5lb 12oz. John Gamble came third with a 3lb 4oz catch of a big bream and some small fish.

Lychgate Fisheries Wednesday open was won by Paul T Twigger who also qualified for the Lychomania final with his winning 77lb 12oz catch of carp taken on pole fished paste. Runner-up Bruce Robinson had a quiet last hour, after having to swim after his rod which was pulled in by an angry carp. Bruce used method feeder tactics to take second place with 61lb 4oz. Suzi Smith finished third with 49lb 14oz.

Paul Cayless took the honours in Mill on the Soar’s Tuesday open match. Paul switched between pole and feeder tactics to land 38lb 1oz of bream and carp. Tom Watt came second with 34lb 12oz with Brian Lewis taking third place with a 26lb 5oz catch.

Shackersto­ne open matches are attracting good turnouts and in Sunday’s contest both Barton Road and the Horse & Jockey sections were used. Alan Dixon had a catch of small bream from the Horse & Jockey section to win with 3lb 15oz. Kev Milne weighed 3lb 11oz to finish second from the Barton Road end. Hubert Noar came third with 3lb 5oz. The canal was near top form as everyone caught fish and 2lb plus catches were a-plenty.

Flat calm and hot weather made conditions difficult in Sat- urday’s Lychgate Fisheries open. Daniel Eaton fished a method feeder to win with a 48lb 12oz catch. Kev Clarke pole fished pellet to finish second with 33lb 14oz with Terry Brindley in third with a 30lb 10oz catch on pole fished paste.

With only a slight breeze touching parts of Higham Lane, Saturday’s hot weather also made sport difficult for the latest round of the summer series. Series leader Andy Findley used a pellet feeder to land a winning 76lb 9oz. Darren Milne came second with a 72lb catch with Martin Ireland third with 64lb 11oz.

There were lots of big carp hooked and lost in Sunday’s Lychgate Fisheries open. Steve Brindley did manage to net most of the ones he hooked and he finished with a winning 81lb 2oz catch. Saturday’s winner Daniel Eaton had to settle for second place with 47lb 12oz. Paul Gardner finished third with 42lb 4oz.

The Pete Hogg Memorial series starts on the canal this Saturday. Fished over the next eight weeks, the draw for this first match is at the Globe Inn Snarestone at 1pm. Lychgate Fisheries have open matches/Lychomania qualifiers on Saturday, draw 9am, and on Sunday, draw noon. Shackersto­ne have an open match this Sunday, draw 8am at the Rising Sun. Mill on the Soar have an open match every Tuesday, draw 8.30am. Maynes Lakes have an open match every Wednesday, draw 10am. Lychgate Fisheries have an open match every Wednesday, draw 9am. Higham Lane Fishery have an open match every Thursday, draw 9am. Brookfield Angling Club have restarted their Sunday and Wednesday open matches. Draw for both is at 9am.
