Four-wicket win is reward for all-round team performance

-

BARWELL secured their first win of the season following an excellent team performance away at Egerton Park.

The home side finished on 141 in the 39th over and Barwell swooped to a four-wicket victory to give their fight to avoid relegation a major boost.

After being asked to bat first, Egerton Park made a flying start which saw Hussain and Tyler score 36 runs in the first four overs.

However, opening bowlers Lee Skene and Guy Norris stuck to their guns and managed to rein in the batsmen before Norris claimed a brace of wickets in the 14th over to reduce Egerton Park to 67-2.

When Ady Baker claimed a wicket with his second ball of the day, Egerton Park were suddenly 85-3, which soon became 91-4 when Lee Skene had Bailey caught for two.

A stand of 46 for the fifth wicket between Tyler and Madden took the score on to 137 in the 34th over.

Madden was the first to depart when Kyle Newall had him stumped by Danny Moran for 21.

There then followed a spell of five wickets for just four runs in the space of six overs as Kyle Newall and Nick Hines wrapped up the innings.

Egerton Park were finally out for 141 in the 39th over as the wickets were shared between Hines (3-6), Newall (2-20), Norris (2-43), Baker (1-24) and Skene (1-44).

With 50 overs in which to score the 142 required for victory, Barwell were able to pace their innings but found themselves 29-2 after 11 overs.

Adam Stapleford-Jones and Jack Smith took the score on to 64 before Stapleford-Jones was trapped lbw by Glover for 28.

Smith then put on a further 22 runs with Danny Moran for the fourth wicket before the decisive stand between Smith and Guy Norris took the score to 131.

There was a mini wobble as Norris was caught and bowled for 26 and Smith was caught for an impressive 50.

Nick Hines steadied the nerves as a couple of lusty blows took Barwell to a well-earned victory and a valuable 25 points.

Barwell will hope to build on this victory as they entertain Leicester Ivanhoe Seconds next Saturday.
