Time to shop neighbours if they are speeding

Councillor’s call to crack down on motorists

FAMILIES living off the A47 are being asked to keep a log of speeding motorists and bikers on and around Normandy Way - even if it means ‘dobbing in’ a neighbour.

Householders have complained for years about cars and motorbikes racing along the northern perimeter road and using the adjacent estate streets as rat runs.

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, highways authority Leicestershire County Council and Leicestershire Police are also aware of the problem but largely unable to act.

Now one fed-up councillor who lives in the area has launched a campaign to try and help increase enforcement.

Councillor David Cope wants people to keep records of speedster, registering as much detail as possible including registration numbers and ideally, also taking photographic or video evidence.

His rallying call comes after he went to Normandy Way to try and capture information himself on vehicles using the road as a racetrack and dangerous and illegal driving by both cars and motorbikes.

He explained: “Recently I took a high speed camera and went to the northern perimeter road to see if I could get some evidence in respect of the behaviour of some drivers. What I saw was acts of incredible stupidity and clear indifference to the safety and welfare of anyone else on the roads, no respect to anyone or the legal limits.

“One case in particular was two motorbikes overtaking all the way along the road from the Wykin roundabout to the Roston Drive roundabout and passing on the wrong side of the safety bollards in the road at the end of Outlands Drive.”

He said he believed some of the culprits were local to the area and even though they might be friends or neighbours the “sheer idiocy of some drivers and riders” needed to be redressed.

He added: “What they are doing is illegal and downright dangerous and a threat to the residents of this area and indeed beyond I would speculate. I have started a log file of times, days and roughly where I believe the events are taking place, and where possible, taking evi- dence that can be passed on to the appropriate authority.

“Unfortunately, it may mean that some people we know will be subject to the enforcement we are seeking, but driving like this, and on estate roads that we have, is not realistic, and must be stopped.”

The councillor is hoping many residents will take up the baton and begin recording details of racers, particularly late at night or in the early hours.
