Launch date set for new garden scheme

-

MUSIC, crafts and drama will mark the launch of plans for a new community garden.

St Mary’s Church in Hinckley will be hosting a half-day of creative activities and performance in the grounds of the town centre place of worship, which are to be developed into a more welcoming communal space.

The event will run from 10am to 2pm on Saturday August 20 and feature face painting, children’s games, acoustic music, choral and dramatic performances, arts and crafts and storytelling.

Refreshments will be on sale but people are encouraged to take along their own seats and eats to enjoy the entertainment on offer.

Planned to be “a peaceful place for all”, project leaders are aiming to develop the grassed churchyard into a place of “discovery, conversation and welcome”.

Backed by support from the public, given during a consultation exercise earlier this year, the plans will see areas planted to encourage wildlife and seating added, encouraging people to stop and spend time in the town centre green space.

Work will be carried out by volunteers, under the guidance of heritage, conservation and nature organisations.

People willing to get involved will be encouraged to sign up to become a Friend of St Mary’s Garden.

In return for a £5 annual membership fee, Friends will receive a membership pack, a list of volunteering opportunities and be able to opt in to receive regular newsletters.

Project leader Michele Crooks said: “We hope to have some information about where we are, sign people up to become Friends of St Mary’s Garden, show people where the plans are and have fun!”

If the weather is bad, the event will be held inside the church.

Businesses are also being called on to support the scheme.

A news bulletin from Hinckley BID informs members that: “St Mary’s Church project organisers are seeking to create an inspired garden space, cared for by community groups within Hinckley to provide a place of peace, discovery, conversation and welcome.

“A place for everyone, open to all faiths and none.

“Project organisers are seeking businesses who wish to sponsor a section of the garden and also for volunteers to provide assistance.”
