Councillors need to let the Co-operative issue go

-

AROUND 60 years ago, I recall eight of us who worked in the hosiery trade at Atkins, would go every Friday night for a game of table skittles to the Sarah Mansfield pub.

From Hinckley we went past the Three Pots in Burbage and then past the Axe & Compass at Wolvey.

If I recall correctly we went further along the road and saw a sign depicting Willey, where I think the Sarah Mansfield pub was situated.

One Saturday night I went there with Bill Davis after we had watched Leicester City beat Luton in the FA Cup and Eric Morecombe saw the game. The best goal I saw by Keith Weller.

Despite the closure of the Hinckley Co-op some months ago, may I say that I do not blame in any way the local Labour party for the situation in Castle Street or even The Crescent development.

For many years I went to council meetings and even when I doubted the issues I always knew the council would go ahead with whatever they decided.

Over around 20 years under the SDP, Lib or Cons many of us have become used to problems with traffic, cycle paths, hospitals, schools and now to cap it all Rosemary Wright wishes to buy the Co-op for £1.6 million. For heaven’s sake councillors get your heads together and realise that with internet shopping, nail parlours and charity shops all over the place besides Hinckley, we have entered a different world.

As a teacher friend of mine remarked, in a pub admittedly, no one uses common sense any more.

How can I argue with a teacher or even a politician. Terry Langham Hinckley
