Boundary secures back to back victories for Barwell team

-

BARWELL Cricket Club first team secured back-to-back victories for the first time this season with a thrilling one wicket win against Leicester Ivanhoe 2nds.

On winning the toss Barwell asked Ivanhoe to bat first and for the second matching running their opponents got off to a flying start. Their opening stand of 61 was finally broken when Ady Baker claimed the wicket of Matthew Twigg for 36.

Richard Newbery and Philip Twigg then put on 57 for the second wicket. The stand was broken when Kyle Newall had Twigg caught by Skene for 34.

A further seven wickets then fell for just 19 runs as Kyle Newall, Lee Skene and Nick Hines tore into the Ivanhoe middle order.

A stand of 20 for the ninth wicket took Ivanhoe total to 157 before Skene and Hines wrapped up the innings in the 43rd over with 160 on the board.

Kyle Newall was the pick of the Barwell bowlers as he claimed 5-40 off his 12 overs and was well supported by Skene, 2-35 and Hines 2-19.

Adam Stapleford-Jones got Barwell’s reply off to an excellent start before being bowled by James Lafferty for 43 to make the score 67-3 off 17 overs.

A fifth wicket stand of 54 between Danny Moran and Kyle Newall was eventually broken when Moran was bowled for 21. Newall went on to score 33 before being seventh man out with the score on 139.

Two quick wickets then left Barwell requiring a further nine runs for victory from their final pair. Fortunately for Barwell, Ady Baker, 14 not out and Lee Skene eight not out were able to take Barwell to victory with Skene hitting a boundary to score the winning runs.

The victory takes Barwell off the bottom of the table and they will hope to continue this run of good form as they travel to Ibstock Town this weekend.

Elsewhere, Barwell 2nds travelled to Grace Dieu Park 2nds where, on losing the toss, they were asked to bat first.

Openers Sam Fisher and George Baker took the score to 52 before Baker was first out, closely followed by Fisher for a fluent 38.

Two further quick wickets saw Barwell slump to 66 for four after 28 overs. However, a stand of 58 between Chris Moore and Sam Taylor took the score to 124.

Taylor was the first to depart for 26 followed by Moore for 36 as Barwell closed their innings on 140 for eight.

Grace Dieu’s run chase started well until Liam Tillin and Chris Moore took three quick wickets between them. With Geoff Hines claiming 2-2 off his six overs Barwell sensed the possibility of an unexpected victory.

Sadly an unbeaten 25 from Ryan Newton took Grace Dieu to their winning total of 142-6 with just two overs remaining.

Barwell will continue their fight to avoid relegation this weekend as they entertain promotion hopefuls Appleby Magna.
