-

A PRISONER who absconded from an open prison more than two weeks ago is still on the run and police believe he is in Leicestershire.

Gavin Owens, 33, was jailed for attempted murder following a violent brawl in Hinckley town centre eight years ago.

Suffolk Police are appealing for help in tracing the man who absconded overnight from a facility in Hollesley Bay.

Members of the public are advised not to approach him and to contact the police immediately if they see him or know his whereabouts.

A Suffolk Police spokeswoman said it is believed Owens has returned to Leicestershire.

She said: “Gavin Owens is still outstanding and investigations to locate him are continuing.

“We believe he is in Leicestershire but we can’t rule out the possibility he is elsewhere in the country too.

“We are liaising with Leicestershire Police and would encourage anyone who sees him or knows where he is to contact their local police immediately and to not approach him.”

She also cautioned anyone against protecting Owens, who is also known as Gavin Burrell.

He was serving an indeterminate sentence for attempted murder, causing grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm following an attack on a man outside the Dog and Gun pub, on Mansion Street, on December 30 2008.

Owens is described as white, 5ft 11in tall, medium build, with green eyes and very short brown hair.

He has several tattoos including a Celtic band on his right upper arm.
