Library in community’s hands

-

MARKET Bosworth has become the latest village to see its library transferred to community control.

Volunteers took over the building and its services last week and are looking forward to welcoming visitors old and new.

Market Bosworth was among the raft of rural outlets Leicestershire County Council decided would close or be run by locals as part of a cost-cutting exercise.

In October 2014 Steve Kelly called the first public meeting to gather support to save the library, becoming chairman of the steering group, then the new Market Bosworth Community Library charity.

However, having helped secure the future of the venue, Steve has stepped down and the new chairman Brian Granger had the honour of opening the newly transferred library.

He said: “The library and information service will be open on the same days and at the same times as previously provided by the county council. All previous users, and it is hoped lots of new readers, will be welcomed by our volunteers. The full range of library services previously provided will be available.

“The trustees of the new charity MBCL look forward to further developing the library as a community resource and are grateful for the local support which will now ensure the future of this most valuable asset.”
