Cash raised for man who lost leg

-

STAFF at a Hinckley supermarket have raised £7,000 for a colleague who lost a leg following a crash last year.

Graham Ashby, 61, suffered “horrific” injuries after he was involved in a collision with a red Triumph motorcycle on Dodwells Road, near the entrance of Tesco’s distribution centre, on December 3.

The Burbage man, who was a pedestrian, was left fighting for his life in University Hospital Coventry and needed to be resuscitated twice.

He is slowly recovering and is getting used to a prosthetic right limb.

His former colleagues at the distribution centre raised thousands of pounds to aid his recovery through a charity night at Hinckley Rugby Club.

Bachelor Graham said: “I would like to thank everybody who helped raise money for me, especially Andy Newton, Lindsey Price and Liz Lees, who ran a marathon for me.

“They have been fundraising for months and I’m very grateful for their support. My recovery is ongoing and it will be three or four months before I can walk without crutches.”

He said the crash happened as he was walking into work at 6.30am.

He added: “I was taken to the intensive care unit at Walsgrave Hospital and I actually died twice.

“Doctors managed to revive me, but I lost my right leg below the knee. “I nearly lost my left leg too.” Local band Superbad entertained guests and a raffle and auction were held.

Overall town businesses donated 80 raffle prizes and 19 auction lots to contribute to the fundraising.

Lindsey Price, from the personnel department at Tesco, thanked the everyone for their support.
