HOLLYCROFT Park in Hinckley has been granted Green Flag status for the seventh year running.

The award marks out the public green space as one of the very best in the country.

Green Flag awards are made to green spaces showing the highest standards of maintenance and offering the best quality facilities.

This year, 1,686 nationwide were deemed worthy of the honour.

Opened 81 years ago, Hollycroft Park retains an original Art Deco bandstand but also boasts modern tennis courts, a bowling green and a pitch and putt course.

It is maintained by Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council staff, in conjunction with community volunteer group the Friends of Hollycroft Park, which organises regular tidyup sessions through the year.

There are swathes of grass and mature trees, vibrant annual bedding features, shrubberies and more naturalistic wildflower areas.

Borough councillor Mark Nickerson, executive member for neighbourhood services, said he was “absolutely delighted” with the award.

It has been given by the Keep Britain Tidy organisation as part of a scheme now in its 20th year.

Cllr Nickerson said: “This award recognises and highlights that people in Hinckley and the surrounding area are benefitting from a green space of the very highest quality.

“It is a popular and beautiful park that has been well visited and used by people from within and outside the borough for many years.

“Thanks are due to the staff at the council, and in particular, the Friends group, for their dedication and hard work that has helped Hollycroft Park get this much deserved award.”

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
