BITTEN nails and nervous smiles made way for hugs and leaps of joy as hundreds of students at Hinckley Academy and John Cleveland Sixth Form Centre tore open their A-level results.

Nearly four out of five (79%) pupils achieved grades between A* to C and scores celebrated getting into the universities of their dreams.

One high-flyer, Georgie Moore, scooped A*s in history and English and an A in maths.

The 18-year-old from Main Street, Stoke Golding, is taking a gap year in Switzerland before heading to Lancaster University to study history next year.

She said: “I’m very pleased with the results, I spent months revising and I can’t wait to relax.”

She was not the only success story at the Butt Lane sixth form.

Eve Wilkes, 18, achieved three As in chemistry, maths and biology after spending up to six hours a day revising.

The teenager, from Butt Lane, Hinckley, is heading to the University of Nottingham to study veterinary medicine in September.

Freya Wood, 17, of John Street, Hinckley, received three As in biology, chemistry and geography and has secured a place at the University of Manchester to study biology.

Meanwhile her partner Kieran Billington, 18, of Hansom Road, Hinckley, is heading just down the road to Sheffield Hallam University to study sports development and coaching after scooping Bs in maths and PE and an C in IT.

Milan Shah, 18, achieved a B in maths, a C in economics and a D in geography and will be attend De Montfort University to study economics and finance next month.

Janet Paterson, head of sixth form, said: “We’ve had a fantastic set of results this year and we’re delighted to see so many people happy to have made it onto their dream courses.

“Congratulations to all who have worked incredibly hard over the past two years to get to where they want to be” .

verall grades betweenO A* and C at the sixth form fell by 6% after last year’s record-high 85%.

The overall pass rate was 95% and Mrs Paterson said she is “particularly delighted” that 62% of maths pupils achieved A* to B grades, while 67% of history students achieved A* to A.

Incoming principal Richard Cahill added: “The results are pretty good given the fact that it is a new school which has come together from Mount Grace and John Cleveland and there’s been many changes to make that happen.

“I think the key thing is that it has been business as usual and we’ve seen the same sort of successes as previous years.

“It’s a steadily improving picture, we’re in line with where we were last year in terms of points scored and average grades are about the same.

“The focus now is to get really drilled down and focus on what small changes we can make to see the next big increase with the current Year 12 as they move to Year 13.”
