Midweek matches
THERE was a full programme of midweek matches for local sides in the run-up to the Bank Holiday weekend.
Barwell gained their first home win of the season in a hardworking performance that gave them victory over a Mickleover side who had started the season well.
A goal in the third minute and a second just before the break stood the home side in good stead but Mickleover’s penalty on the stroke of half time saw the game on a knife edge before the break. As the game progressed, the play became decidedly uneven but no further goals were forthcoming.
Meanwhile Hinckley AFC suffered their first league defeat of the season as Bromsgrove Sporting ran out 3-0 winners at The Victoria Ground.
In truth, AFC lacked a spark and couldn’t stretch the Sporting defence enough to cause major problems.
Keenan Meakin-Richards’ 25 yard free kick gave Bromsgrove the lead, and an Ahmed Ali brace either side of half time secured all three points for the hosts who maintained a 100% record in the league.
And Leicester Road FC built on their opening day win at home as they came back from a first half deficit to claim the points against a competitive Stafford Town side.
The Hinckley side were still in the game despite being a goal down at half time, and a solid second half performance with goals from McGlinchey, Stenson and captain Greg Downes ensured that the visitors went home empty handed.
