Man dies in car crash while being chased by police

A MAN has died after a car smashed in to a railway bridge while being chased by police.

The fatal crash saw the BMW land on its roof while travelling on the A428 near Church Lawford, between Coventry and Rugby, at around 3.15am on Sunday morning.

The 43-year-old man from Coventry was declared dead at the scene and Warwickshi­re Police say that his next of kin have been informed. There was nobody else in the car. An investigat­ion has been launched by the Independen­t Police Complaints Commission and statements are already being taken from the officers involved.

A spokesman for Warwickshi­re Police said: “As is normal in such circumstan­ces, the incident has been referred to the Independen­t Police Complaints Commission and they have confirmed that they will be carrying out an independen­t investigat­ion.

A statement from the IPCC said: “We are independen­tly investigat­ing the actions of Warwickshi­re Police prior to a fatal road traf- fic collision on Sunday morning.

“A man, believed to be aged 43, died after the BMW he was driving was in collision near a railway bridge on the A428 near Church Lawford at around 3.15am. The initial indication­s are that the BMW was being followed by a Warwickshi­re Police vehicle prior to the collision.

“The IPCC has sent investigat­ors to the scene and to the post-incident procedure, where the police officers involved will give their initial statements.”
