Officers still trying to find out what happened

DETECTIVES investigating the death of five-year-old Charlie Dunn after an incident at Bosworth Water Park are making a fresh appeal for information.

The schoolboy had been enjoying a summer day out with his family when the incident which led to his death occurred on Saturday July 23. He was found unconscious in the park’s Blue Lagoon and despite an off-duty paramedic giving CPR he died later in hospital.

Officers appealed for witnesses after the death but despite the park being packed with visitors only a handful have come forward.

Police are still trying to piece together what happened and understand how Charlie ended up in the water. Detective Sergeant Nikki McLatchie, who is working on the investigation, said enquiries carried out since Charlie’s death show more than 500 vehicles passed through the entrance barriers on the day.

The five-year-old from Tamworth was with his mum, Lynsey Dunn, 29, stepdad Paul Smith and sisters Rebecca, aged eight and oneyear-old Jessica-Rai.

Miss Dunn was three months pregnant at the time. She and Mr Smith were arrested by police on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence but released on bail pending further enquiries.

The family were at the park between 11.55am and 3.20pm and were packing up ready to leave when Charlie asked if he could go back inside and play.

According to reports an 11-yearold pulled him from the water at around 2.45pm while searching for his swimming goggles.

By this time his family had gone in search of Charlie because Rebecca had returned to the car without him.

They said they had not expected him to be at the Blue Lagoon as he disliked water.

At the time of the incident Charlie was wearing blue and yellow shorts with Minions printed on them and a grey T-shirt with a picture of Woody from Toy Story on the front. He was also wearing glasses.

Det Sgt McLatchie said: “We are keen to speak to anyone who saw Charlie at the park. Did you see him in the water? Did you see him playing? You may only have a small recollection but it could really help with our investigation.

“We know Charlie was carried out of the water by other park users. Did you see him in the water prior to this?

“If you took any footage from the area around the Blue Lagoon that afternoon please get in touch with us. It could really help us piece together what happened.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 and quote incident 440 of July 23.
