Judgement day for area’s bloom teams
East Midlands results are set to be revealed
GREEN FINGERED volunteers around the borough were today waiting to find out how they have fared in the East Midlands in Bloom contest.
Groups in Market Bosworth, Earl Shilton and Desford all entered this year’s regional round of the Royal Horticultural Society-run Britain in Bloom competition.
Results were to be announced today at a ceremony in Mansfield.
Competition newcomers Desford in Bloom welcomed RHS judge Richard Stephens to their village in early July.
The team planted hanging baskets and containers around the village centre, encouraging children and families to get involved in community planting days, and inviting residents to help fund the venture by making donations in collecting tins in village shops and venues.
Committee member Laura Carr said: “It was great to see so many members of the community behind Desford in Bloom, not only on the run up, but also on judging day supporting us along the route.
“Desford is still looking beautiful with thanks to a hard working team of volunteers that are helping to deadhead and water around the village.
“We are looking forward to East Midlands in Bloom presentation day so fingers crossed for Desford.”
Veteran Bosworth in Bloom volunteers and relative newcomers from Earl Shilton in Bloom will also find out today how they have fared.
Judges were looking for not only horticultural excellence but also environmental responsibility and community participation.
Communities judged to be the best examples of the Bloom scheme in the region will be put forward to represent the East Midlands in the national competition next year.
