PARK lovers are being called on to cast their votes for a Hinckley green space in a bid to see it named one of the top 10 most popular parks in the country.

Hollycroft Park is competing against 1,700 others awarded Green Flag status this year in recognition of their high standards of horticulture and facilities.

Last year, it was included in a similar contest and was voted the 16th most popular park in the UK.

This year, Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, which manages the space, and the Friends of Hollycroft Park who host community events there, are hoping to see it break into the top 10.

People have until noon on Friday September 30 to cast their votes online and the winners will be announced in October.

Hollycroft Park dates from the 1930s and retains an art deco bandstand among its original features.

It has tennis courts, a pitch and putt course and a bowling green, with planting ranging from traditional annual bedding schemes to wildlife friendly borders.

This year saw it receive its seven th consecutive Green Flag award.

Friends of Hollycroft Park secretary Sue Neal said: “Last year we were voted the 16th people’s favourite park in the UK.

“Let’s see if we can get into the top 10 this year.

Green Flag award manager Paul Todd said: “It will be great to celebrate ten of the public’s favourite parks and for them to become the People’s Choice 2016.”

Last year saw more than 30,000 votes cast and Victoria Park in London’s Tower Hamlets crowned as the People’s Choice.

An exhibition celebrating Hollycroft Park, including artworks and photography inspired by the green space, along with displays marking its history and events that hav been held there, will be staged at the Atkins building on Lower Bond Street from September 24 to October 8.
