Retrial sees man convicted of manslaughter
A 27-YEAR-OLD man has been convicted of the manslaughter of a former Leicestershire Police officer after the Supreme Court ordered a retrial in a landmark ruling.
Ameen Jogee, 27, had been facing life in jail over the death of Paul Fyfe in 2011 as an accomplice of Mohammed Hirsi, 29, who fatally stabbed the father-offour.
However following a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court earlier this year, a retrial was ordered on murder and manslaughter charges.
Judges at the time said the law on joint enterprise had been wrongly interpreted for 30 years.
Following a 15 day retrial at Nottingham Crown Court, Jogee was cleared of murder but found guilty of manslaughter.
Mr Fyfe, 47, was stabbed to death in the hallway of his girlfriend’s house in Balderstone Road, Leicester, in June 2011.
The court was told Jogee and Hirsi had spent the evening of June 9 drinking in the city before the pair made their way to the address where Paul was living.
They returned to the property several times that night and threatened Paul, before going back to the house in the early hours of Friday June 10.
An argument broke out and Jogee, who was brandishing a bottle, threatened Paul before Hirsi fatally stabbed him.
Both men were charged with murder and convicted of the offence in March 2012, before being sentenced to a combined total of 42 years imprisonment.
Jogee, currently of HMP Hewell, will be sentenced on September 12 for the new manslaughter conviction.
Detective Inspector David Swift-Rollinson, the senior investigating officer in the case, said: “Today’s result is the culmination of a lengthy legal process following Paul’s death five years ago.
“While we are satisfied with the verdict that has been reached, this further trial has delayed the closure which Paul’s family and relatives have been seeking.”
