The importance of going Wilde

-

BAFTA and Golden Globe-nominated actress Cathy Tyson is set to appear in Leicester’s Curve’s production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest.

The Mona Lisa star, 51, will play the iconic role of Lady Bracknell from Wednesday October 5 to Thursday October 27 in Made at Curve’s re-imagining of the classic 1895 play.

Speaking about her character, Cathy said: “Lady Bracknell is very blunt and she’s hilarious!

“I’ve played very few upper-class characters in my career, so it’s been a joy having fun with this new voice in me of Lady Bracknell.”

An advocate of good lead characters for mid-career black women, Cathy’s performance in the play presents a shift from Lady Bracknell’s traditional portrayal as a middle-aged white character.

“I hope when we are on stage what will come across is the character’s personality and I’d like audiences to see the colour as well and let that work on their imaginations,’’ she said.

Asked what audiences can expect from the new production, Cathy said: “People should expect a lot of fun!

“Come to pay homage to the wonderful writer Oscar Wilde who triumphed over difficulties to raise a smile and give such an incredible creative gift.’’
