New limit at accident blackspot

-

SPEED limits are being cut on a notorious stretch of the A50 in the borough.

The whole stretch of Bradgate Hill between the Field Head roundabout and Glenfield Hospital will now be a 40mph zone.

Leicestershire County Council cabinet members agreed the reduction at their latest meeting.

The measure comes after a long-running campaign by local ward representative Councillor Ozzy O’Shea who backed residents calls for action.

Protests intensified and a petition was launched following a fatal collision which saw the death of Bradgate Hill resident Amrit Gill and her son Taran. The two were killed in a car crash close to their home on January 29 this year.

During the cabinet meeting councillors were also told of three road smashes in which people were injured in connection with the gaps in the central reservation, including fatality in a 2012.

They heard a recent safety audit supported the closure of the gaps and during local consultation 92% of respondents backed such a move.

It was decided to introduce a 40mph speed limit on Leicester Road Glenfield, Groby Road Glenfield, Markfield Road Groby and Bradgate Hill Groby.

Gaps in the central reservation will be closed at Markfield Road and Bradgate Hill in Groby.
