Very first after-school club marks 25th birthday

-

HINCKLEY’S first ever after school club is celebrating a quarter of a century. The club at Battling Brook Primary was a novelty back in 1991 and was a trailblazer for the town.

Opened by Jan Stoker, with permission of Edwina Bradbury and the school governors, it is now in its 25th year and is still going strong.

It wasn’t until 2010 that schools were obliged to provide out-of-hours childcare for their pupils - back in 1991 it was a rare commodity but one which Jan could see would benefit schools, youngsters and their parents.

She said: “It’s been quite a journey. When I opened Battling Brook After School Club my children attended the school, now my grandchildren are there and my son is now a partner in the business.

“It has been a family affair with my husband and daughter also taking part. I have loved looking after the thousands of children who have attended the club over the last 25 years and their children are now filtering through to us as well, full circle. My work has been so rewarding and I have got to know so many lovely families.”

As part of celebrations a party was held with visits from councillor David Bill, who officially opened the club in 1991, the deputy head of the time Pauline Armstrong and Lisa Mathie the present deputy head.

Although unable to attend the party Edwina said: “The club was one of the best things that happened to the school.”

Jan now also runs a breakfast and after school club at Sketchley Hill School and a full day summer club open to all schools during August.
