Priority is saving Holliers Walk site

HINCKLEY businesswoman Rosemary Wright is to stand as a Conservative candidate for next year’s county elections.

The former borough councillor and current president of Hinckley and District Chamber of Trade is back on the campaign trail with a priority of saving the shutdown Holliers Walk school site.

She and existing Hinckley and Bosworth borough councillor Jan Kirby (Con, Hinckley De Montfort) successfully lobbied for the old Mount Grace school to remain as an educational establishment.

After a revamp the school reopened this autumn term as Hinckley Parks Primary, catering for pupils and staff transferred from Holliers Walk.

Now Rosemary and Jan are keen to see Holliers Walk continue as an educational establishment, given the shortage of primary school places in the town.

They will be meeting with Leicestershire County Councillor Ivan Ould, who is lead member at County Hall for children and families, to press him for support.

Rosemary said: “There are many young children who have to go outside Hinckley for a school place even though there has been expansion. It is a nightmare for parents if they have one child in town and the other elsewhere, both logistically and money wise.

“Now the children and staff from Holliers Walk are enjoying the fantastic facilities at Hinckley Parks their former school could be renovated and made suitable for teaching once again.

“The main issue with the school is that the playground area, gifted by some benefactor many years ago, is used as a car park for school staff and there are no playing fields.

“If the staff were to use the car park over the road then that would free the space to allow for outside play for the children.

“There are also parts of the building which could come down to provide even more outside space. Clearly work would have to be done to bring it up to a proper standard for a modern school but we believe it should remain as a school.

“The worst thing that could happen is the building being demolished and the space taken up by flats.”
