AN EXPLOSION made headlines 50 years ago.

Fire broke out a garage in Peckleton after sparks from welding set alight a pile of nearby rubbish.

The blaze spread quickly and a number of oxy-acetylene cylinders exploded.

Workers outside and a pensioner in a neighbouring garden had a lucky escape as pieces of the cylinders flew into the air, damaging brickwork of nearby houses and shattering the window of the village shop.

In sport, the newly formed Market Bosworth Lions rugby club had played its first ever competitive game.

They lost 9-3 away to Oadby Seconds.

A complaint was made in the paper this week in 1966 about how out of date postcards of Hinckley on sale were.

In one, pedestrians in Castle Street were pictured carrying gas masks, so the picture dated back to the Second World War.

And in another, there were no white lines or traffic signs showing in a scene of Regent Street still on sale in the 1960s.

BROUGHTON Astley singer Kristyna Myles had been snapped up to perform with Chris de Burgh after he spotted her busking.

She was singing on the streets of Manchester when de Burgh walked by.

Two months later, her manager sent her demo tape to The Lady in Red Performer and he asked her to duet with him on his album The Storyman.

A homeless Barwell man trekked hundreds of miles to make money - for other people. Stephen Lloyd had spent three months living in a tent but walked 250 miles to the east coast to raise more than £1,600 for the British Heart Foundation.

He walked 20 miles a day alone to a number of seaside towns in Norfolk.

Patient services were straining to meet demand because of the long term closure of 18 beds at Hinckley and Bosworth Community Hospital.

Demand for beds at a care home in Barwell had nearly doubled in September after the closure in August of 2006.

Dean Thomas dedicated Hinckley United’s win against Blyth Spartans to Matt Gadsby.
