Historic places are placed on the ‘at risk’ register

-

TWO areas in Hinckley and a further three across the borough are on the ‘at risk’ register compiled by Historic England.

Hollycroft in Hinckley and the town centre conservation areas are listed as in a “very bad” and ‘poor’ condition respectively.

Hollycroft is described as seeing “no significant change” while the town centre is classed as “deteriorating”, although both areas are in the low vulnerability category.

Barwell’s conservation area around Arthur Street is also marked down as in a poor condition and deteriorating.

The remaining two sites, both Grade II* listed, are the stables and kennels to Bradgate House in Groby and the Church of St John the Evangelist, Church Lane in Shenton, both regarded as at risk of immediate decay with no solution agreed.

The brick-built stables and kennels were constructed in 1856 to house the 7th Earl of Stamford’s 47 horses. He was the master of the Quorn hunt, known for his extravagance and is said to have paid £30,000 to build the stables - a fortune at the time.

Vaguely Jacobean in style they were mostly in ruin before 1988.

Now they are described as “derelict” and in “very bad” condition and while some consolidation works have been completed there are areas which have deteriorated further.

Structural failure is visible at the junction of the main tower and courtyard ranges.

The church, mostly dating back to 1860, is said to have some significant masonry defects including failed copings and open joints. Drainage around the church is poor and there is cracking to the chancel.

The tower roof, in need of repair, is inaccessible due to timber decay in the belfry. A Listed Places of Worship Roof and Repairs grant was offered in July and should address some of the work required.
