Is it illegal to ride a bike on pavement or did policeman make up rule?

-

I WISH to add my comments to the footpath changes that the barmpot county council has gone and introduced to the pavements throughout the borough of Hinckley.

Who on earth is in charge of the planning schemes, do they not realise cyclists and pedestrians do not go together. It will take a cyclist knocking over a pedestrian before this stupid scheme is abolished.

I myself have encountered numerous near misses with cyclists on pavements and I am sure I am not alone in this occurrence. We have made our once safe footpaths into death traps with Bradley Wiggins and Chris Hoy lookalikes bobbin and weaving at break neck speeds in and out of old age pensioners, mums with buggies, disabled and blind people.

The cyclists are not half the time equipped with a warning bell or lights to let you know, that they are riding up behind you. So could someone from the council or police force tell me who will be liable when one of the tour de France army collide with a pedestrian?

I remember when I was a boy and got a racing bike for Christmas.

I used to ride my bike up and down Castle Street everyday whilst on my way to school.

One day the local beat bobby game me a right earful for riding on the pavement as he said it was an offence to ride a bicycle on the public footpath. I was terrified he would tell my parents and I never rode my bike on the pavement ever again.

So if it was an offence in the good old days to ride on the pavement why then is it ok to do so now.

Has the law regarding cycling on a pavement been abolished? Was there ever been such a law or was the bobby who stopped me just telling me porky pies? Either way it would be nice to know.

Cars fully parked on pavements, that seems to be legal as traffic wardens turn a blind eye to this practice as do the police. A very nervous Merevale Avenue pedestrian
