LYCHGATE Fishery’s open Charity Pairs match raised a superb amount of around £900 for Macmillan.

Despite the good cause the fish were playing hard to catch with Kev Ward and Steve Harris top pair with a combined catch of 61lb 15oz. Neil and Dale Jackson were second with a combined 46lb 6oz while Darren Milne and Paul Burgess took third with 44lb 9oz. Top individual on the day was Steve Jackson who weighed 43lb 10oz. Darren Milne finished second with 37lb 4oz with Steve Harris third with 31lb 15oz. The whole day was a superb effort by fishery owner Paul Bates, well done sir!

Most anglers complain about floating leaves but in Saturday’s Higham Lane open, there were almost as many carp as they were leaves in Andy Findley’s swim! With the carp sheltering just below the surface Andy set about catching them, dropping a grain of sweetcorn in front of their noses as they swam by. The tactic worked and Andy finished up with another big weight, winning with 115lb 7oz. Martin Ireland pole fished pellet in the margin to take second place with 92lb 8oz. Rich Wells also fished close in to take several big fish finishing third with 66lb 11oz.

The biggest turkey on offer in Sunday’s Shackersto­ne Fur & Feather contest was won by Kev Milne who used his favourite worm method to land a big perch of 1lb 8oz and several smaller perch to weigh a total of 2lb 2oz. The next two anglers also won their Christmas dinners with Kev Cooper landing 1lb 15oz of small roach to finish second while Phil Hicks caught small roach and perch to take third place with 1lb 8oz.

Mick Linnett continued his winning run in Tuesday’s open at Mill on the Soar. On a hard day, Mick needed just 15lb 13oz to win. Tom Watt finished second with 10lb 11oz with Paul Cayliss taking third place with 8lb 8oz.

Maynes Lakes’ Wednesday open was won in style by Alby Beehl who pole fished sweetcorn in the margins to catch 51lb 8oz. Results; Section 1, Pool 1; Alan Wilson with 22lb; Section 2 Pool 1; John Baughan with 17lb. Section 3 Pool 3; Tony Simonetti 23lb. Section 4 Pool 3; Alby Beehl.

Thursday’s Higham Lane Fishery open match was won by Graham Beckworth with a 37lb 10oz catch. Mark Jaques was second with 33lb 11oz with Terry Sanderson taking third place with a 31lb 9oz catch.

Wednesday’s Lychgate Fishery open was won by the in form Suzie Smith who went three hours before her first fish. Two big carp in a 15 minute spell was enough to win her the match, as she finished with two carp and some small fish to weigh 21lb 4oz. Runner-up Martin Thompson pole fished maggot to catch a small carp and nine small bream to weigh 9lb 6oz. Rob Orton included two big perch for around 4lb as part of his third place 9lb 4oz catch. Mick Smith finished fourth with 8lb 14oz.

Brookfield held an open match at Stoke Golding on Sunday. Ray Linnarts landed 47lb 13oz of carp. David Sutton finished second with 25lb 12oz with Ray Lewis taking third with 25lb 4oz. The next open match will be on Sunday November 13, draw 9am

There’s no open match this Saturday at Higham Lane Fishery, due to the annual Mick Varley Memorial Contest, which is fully booked.

Lychgate Fisheries have an open match every Saturday, draw 9am.

Shackersto­ne have an open match this Sunday, draw 8am at the Rising Sun.

Mill on the Soar have an open match every Tuesday, draw 8.30am.

Maynes Lakes have an open match every Wednesday, draw 10am.

Higham Lane Fishery have open matches every Thursday, draw 9am.
