Rematch revenge is sweet for Leicester Road

MIDS DIV ONE

- Uttoxeter Town 1 Leicester Road FC 5

A SEVEN match unbeaten league run was on the line as Leicester Road travelled to Uttoxeter Town to try and reverse last week’s result and a disappointing FA Vase exit.

After Tuesday’s convincing Senior Cup win, Daryll Thomas retained his place in the starting line up with Josh Unsworth, and Connor McEnroe, with Greg Downes and Luke Kingsley Smith reclaiming starting places.

The home side were the first to show and after Josh Smith was cautioned for a foul on the edge of the Leicester Road box, the resulting free-kick came to nothing.

This spurred the visitors into action and with their slick passing and movement off the ball, they went on to dominate the first half.

Midweek hat-trick hero Jake Holt was at it again when he took a ball in his stride and bent a right foot beauty into the corner to give the visitors the lead.

After the hosts had seen an effort go just over it was Holt again who came close to increasing the lead.

He wasn’t to be denied for long though as a run down the right from Joe Lyne saw his pull-back hammered into the net by Holt to make it two.

Tom McGlinchey then scored a superb effort as he flicked the ball over the defender’s head before dinking the ball over the keeper.

It was one way traffic at this stage as Leicester Road showed their capabilities and they increased the lead further when Lyne found Thomas who turned and finished well to make it four.

The visitors weren’t finished and on the stroke of half-time Lyne shot narrowly over after good work down the flanks.

The half-time break saw Alex Kent on for Thomas up front and the visitors were soon looking to further increase the lead. Uttoxeter were looking to make amends for their poor first-half display and were soon matching Leicester Road as they looked to try and force their way back into the game.

Their efforts were to prove unsuccessful though and it was Downes who made it 5-0 after great work from McGlinchey.

The hosts did finally get themselves on the score sheet when a clearance was missed and substitute Lewis Sherwin scored with a low strike.

They continued to try and make a game of it but Leicester Road were defending stoutly until a Uttoxeter effort came back off the cross bar.

Going into the last 10 minutes it was Leicester Road who upped the tempo and both Kent and McEnroe had chances cleared off the line before the referee ended the game.
