League leaders see margin cut in town table tennis league

-

THE TITLE aspirations of RE Studios 1 were dented when visitors Goons defeated the home side by eight sets to two - the first defeat of the season for RE Studios.

Lucky Obi and Jason Woodfield from Goons won their three sets. RE Studios still top the table but the loss sees their lead reduced to just five points over closest rivals Bar- lestone A and George Ward A who both have a match in hand over the current leaders.

RE Studios 1 came back strongly in their next match to overcome Cat B by 10 sets to nil to keep the pressure on their rivals.

Second-placed Barlestone A proved far too strong for their own second team easily despatching them 10 sets to nil. However, they didn’t have things their own way in their next match when they came up against last season’s champions George Ward A.

This was a very close and tense match with no fewer than four sets going to five games with a further three sets going to a fourth game.

George Ward A led five sets to two at one point but Barlestone fought back mainly through the undefeated Adam Pettitt to pull back to a final score of four sets to Bar- lestone and six sets to George Ward A.

Hugglescote Rams won a close match with Cat B by six sets to four. Indeed after three sets Rams trailed by two sets to one but with both Barry Taylor and Kieran Storer taking wins in the next two sets, they went three sets to two up and never looked back. Taylor and Storer secured the doubles and the victory by beating Robert Geary and John Henshaw.

Queen’s C could find no cracks in the armoury of George Ward B, going down to a 10 sets to nil defeat at home. Rob Whittaker from George Ward B was man of the match in this clash of the Barwell sides.

Cat A ably led by Alex Mason who scored a splendid maximum were just too good for Nalgo overcoming them by 10 sets to nil.
