AFC hit a dozen in goalfest

FA TROPHY

- Barwell FC 1 Ilkeston Town 0

SPECTATORS were treated to a spectacular match on Saturday as Hinckley AFC cut loose in front of their home fans and put basement side Southam United to the sword.

Ryan Seal hit four while Paul Sullivan notched a hat-trick, alongside goals from Javia Roberts (2), Peter Williams (2) and Lee Butler.

IN A tightly contested FA Trophy tie, Barwell gave their best 90 minute performance of the season to see off Ilkeston who had beaten them twice previously in this campaign, writes Merv Nash.

The win was built on a solid back four, a disciplined midfield who also created chances, and a tireless front two who troubled the Ilkeston defence all afternoon.

Barwell took the initiative from the first whistle, an Owen Story cross was almost turned into his own goal by Ilkeston defender Jak Kenworthy.

In the 34th minute Barwell deservedly broke the deadlock, a pass by man of the match Nigel Julien found Eddy Nisevic, his surging run and cross was met by Story in front of goal and he neatly turned the ball home.

As Barwell continued to press Declan Towers volleyed a Brady Hickey corner inches over the bar.

On 47 minutes Anthony Dwyer raised Ilkeston’s hopes, but his drive was blocked by Barwell’s birthday boy Niall Rowe. With an hour gone makeshift striker Joe Ballinger forced Ilkeston keeper Ross Durrant into a superb reflex save, but the ball fell to Hickey who rolled it across to Ballinger and the Canaries were two up.

Ilkeston tried to get back in the match without much success with Laim Castle in the Barwell goal rarely troubled.

Barwell are at home Saturday November 5 to Blyth Spartans, kick off 3pm.
