School teams in top Warriors event
PUPILS from an Earl Shilton school have competed in a national rugby competition after being selected by the Leicester Tigers Academy.
Heath Lane Academy went head to head with schools from across the country at the Urban Rugby Squad six-a-side National Finals held at Worcester Warriors’ Sixways Stadium.
All schools were chosen by Premiership rugby clubs to represent their counties.
The day started with the Heath Lane team warming up and com- pleting drills with a coach from The Tigers academy.
They then competed against other teams vying for a place in the final, but didn’t quite make it.
Teacher Jenni Hubbard said: “Although they didn’t win the tournament, they competed in great spirit and to a high level.
“The students thoroughly enjoyed the day, some more so than they expected to.
“It was a great achievement for the students and Heath Lane Academy to be selected by the Leicester Tigers to represent Leicestershire schools in such a national and prestigious event.
“Well done to all those who competed.”
To celebrate the occasion, the students were presented with a full Leicester Tigers rugby kit and other goodies.
Student Megan Turnball said: “It was amazing to have a coach from the Leicester Tigers teaching us skills to use in the matches.”
Kelsea Grant added: “We loved having the chance to play on the artificial pitch inside the Worcester Warriers stadium.”
