- with Richard Wade

ANDY Findley won the Higham Lane Fishery Thursday Open match with a very respectable 60lb 11oz catch of carp.

Drawn on peg 13, “The Fin” pole fished sweetcorn at the start before switching to pellet and caught small carp throughout the match.

John Varley came second from the other end of the lake, using a small pellet feeder on peg 24 to land 46lb 11ozs of carp to 8lb Dave Hurlston finished third with 22lb 9ozs.

The same two anglers filled the top two places in the Saturday Open match, but this time it was John Varley who won the day.

Drawn on peg 25 John again used a small pellet feeder and used several different hook baits through out the day to finish with 34lb 7ozs. Andy Findley came second from peg 10 with a 33lb 6oz catch with Guy Hope taking third place with a 27lb 6ozs catch.

The final round of Shackerstone’s Members Winter League series was fished along the Barton Road length.

After spending most of the match without a bite Jock Nicolson was well into packing up when he noticed that his float had disappeared.

The culprit was a match winning 1lb 12oz perch that Jock had to net with his keep net as he had already packed his landing net away.

Ian Plant fished bread punch to catch 1lb 6ozs of small roach for second place. Kev Milne landed a 10oz perch to finish third. League winner was Ashby Canal legend Doug Dimbleby with nine points. Kev Milne and Kevin Cooper tied for second place, both finishing with 13 points and both weighed a total of 2lb 5ozs.

It was a fine day weatherwise but the fish weren’t biting in Maynes Lakes’ Wednesdy Open contest, and sport was a lot harder than normal.

Swapping hook baits to keep getting bites worked for Alan Wilson who took the honours with just 10lb. Results: Pool One; first - Alan Wilson peg 39. Second - Tony Simonetti peg 37 with 5lb 2ozs. Pool Two; First - Colin Bent 9lb 8ozs peg 7. Second - Dave Bolton 8lb 2ozs, peg 10.

It was back to winning ways for Suzi Smith as she won Saturday’s Lychgate Fisheries Open contest. Drawn on peg 69 Suzi fished a pellet feeder to catch 24lb 4ozs of carp. Steve Brindley finished second with a 20lb 6oz catch from peg 37.

Sunday’s Lychgate Fisheries was dominated by silver fish as few carp fed. Eric Lillyman took the days top catch, weighing 11lb 4ozs of small roach and bream. Tae Pursey finished second with 8lb 9ozs with Darren Milne finishing third with a 7lb 6oz catch.

Mill on the Soar’s Tuesday Open contest was won by Wayne Smith with a 21lb catch from peg 10. Adam Townsend came second from peg 31 with 16lb 7ozs. Dick Makepeace was third with a 11lb 9oz catch while veteran ‘feeder flinger’ Tom Watt finished fourth with 9lb 3ozs.
