Former pupil funds school foundation

-

A FUND has been set up to allow children from families needing financial assistance to attend a private school in the borough.

The Dixie Grammar School in Market Bosworth has launched the Heathcote Foundation using a bequest from a former pupil.

Bernard Heathcote attended the school from 1932 until 1939 after winning a scholarship.

He died aged 95 in November 2015 leaving what the Dixie has described as a “generous bequest” to support “students who would benefit from the advantages that a Dixie education offers but whose families require financial support”.

Parents of pupils and other school supporters are being invited to make donations to the fund, to help widen the opportunity of a Dixie education to as many young people as possible.

A school spokesman said: “Our goal is to offer future students the educational opportunity of a lifetime, while keeping Mr Heathcote’s story and generosity alive.”

As a Dixie pupil Mr Heathcote was appointed head boy and captain of the school’s football and cricket teams, twice winning the Victor Ludorum for excellence in sport.

After he left, he spent five years in the Army with the Royal Signals then trained as a teacher and worked in schools until his retirement in 1985.

He taught at Earl Shilton Junior School in the 1940s and arrived at St Peter’s Junior School in Market Bosworth in 1951, where he remained for the following 34 years.
