Canaries are pegged back

-

BARWELL were held to a draw at Grantham Town despite going ahead twice in the match, writes Oli Osborne.

The Canaries went ahead early on through Callum Ball and were pegged back shortly after half-time.

Liam Kay nodded home to give the visitors the lead for a second time, but in-form Grantham fought back strongly to claim a late leveller.

It took just two minutes for Barwell to open the scoring, finding the net for the first time since the New Year.

Striker Ball reacted well to a ball forward and outmuscled his opposite man before finding the bottom corner with an assured finish.

Barwell continued to dominate the half but couldn’t find a second.

Skipper Brady Hickey forced goalkeeper Kieran Preston into a good save with an effort on the turn.

On the stroke of halftime, Ball fed Owen Story through on goal with a reverse pass and the shot across goal was well cleared off the line by full-back Luther Wildin.

The hosts introduced Felipe Barcelos following the interval and the striker contributed towards a change in momentum.

Lee Shaw brought the hosts level inside 10 minutes of the second half with a header in off the crossbar.

But Jimmy Ginnelly’s side quickly responded and put themselves ahead again with defender Kay converting from Luke Barlone’s cross.

Substitute Barcelos scored an equaliser from close range for the home side in the final minutes as Barwell continue to search for a first victory of 2017.

Barwell: Castle, Taylor, Kay, Stanley, Nisevic, Story, Hickey, Hildreth, Tomkinson, Ball, Barlone (Baldwin 73).

Subs not used: Smith-Varnam, Ballinger, Lavery, Julien.
