Siblings win national racing titles

-

TWO schoolchildren from Barwell have followed in their dad’s footsteps by whizzing to victory in national stock car championships.

Toni Rogers, 15, and her 11-year-old brother, Cole, both won titles in the Junior American Stock Car (JASCAR) 2016 season.

Toni, a pupil at Hinckley Academy, started racing at the age of 12 after being inspired by her Miniature American Stock Car Racing (MASCAR) dad, Anthony Rogers.

She won back-to-back championships in 2015 and 2016, taking this year’s contest right to the wire and clinching the title at the final race of the year.

Following on from her success, Team Rogers decided to buy younger brother Cole a JASCAR too.

The Barwell Academy youngster made his debut aged just 10 and amazingly scooped the rookie points title for 2016.

Mum Sue is involved as a MASCAR and JASCAR pit official who looks after the cars and ensures they are ready to go out on the track.

The racing family, dubbed Team Rogers, attend quarter-mile ovals across the country on a 14 date race calendar, including events in Birmingham, Skegness, Northampton, Swaffham, Buxton and an annual two day meeting in Scotland.

JASCARs, also known as pocket rockets due to their small size, run on a 390cc Honda engine built in the USA.

They can reach a top speed of 50mph, with average speeds of 40mph, and are similar to Go Karts but with roll cages and a fibreglass body.

The cars race on a quarter mile track and are not allowed to make contact, unlike other stock car racing.

The sport is very popular in the USA.
