Event to mark holocaust
A REMEMBRANCE event is being hosted by Leicestershire County Council to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
The council will be holding the event this Friday at County Hall from 1pm to commemorate the date, which is the international day of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust and all other genocides.
The event, which is open to the public, includes a brief presentation from Professor Aubrey Newman, from the oldest Holocaust research centre in the UK.
The date specifically commemorates the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi extermination and concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau on January 27 1945.
It also remembers the tragic loss of life as a result of subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda, Darfur and other locations to be commemorated.
Councillor Pam Posnett, cabinet member for equalities, said: “Days like this give us the opportunity to learn, remember and unite, to try to prevent these terrible events from happening, once and for all.
“We are honoured to have Professor Newman with us at this key event, which includes a period of silent reflection as we remember and honour those who have suffered and continue to suffer from crimes against humanity.”
Booking is not required for the event. However, if anyone has any special requirements, or would like any further information, they should contact Andrew Jeffreys on 0116 305 5501.
