Get on the run to bust mental health stigma

-

AN ACTIVE event to help break down the stigma associated with mental health problems was supported in Desford.

A five mile run was organised by Desford Striders ahead of Time to Talk Day.

In an initiative backed by England Athletics and mental health charity Mind, Thursday February 2 has been designated Time to Talk Day.

Events are ongoing from January 28 to February 3.

Desford’s run was an early bird event, taking place on January 19.

Now others across the borough are being urged to join in the campaign which aims to show how getting out and taking part in physical activity can be a boost to mood and help alleviate the strain of mental distress.

A spokesman said: “You don’t have to have mental health issues to join the campaign, anyone can take part.

One in four of us experience mental health problems each year and running can help everyone’s mental well-being.

“We can all play a part in breaking down the stigma attached to mental health.”

A Facebook page has been created to promote the week and people are being urged to share information, tag friends and upload photos and messages before and after running.

Running a mile or further with friends, family or colleagues is suggested or participants can join an organised event.

For those not used to running there’s always the option to jog or even walk.
