New chairman for Hinckley Music Club
A NEW chairman has been elected to lead Hinckley Music Club.
Philip Worley, who is chairman of St Mary’s Arts (Smarts) which hosts monthly lunchtime concerts in Hinckley’s parish church, has taken on the role vacated by Nigel Allcoat last year.
Mr Worley was elected at the club’s annual general meeting, at which Ruth Duke and Stan Rooney agreed to continue serving as secretary and treasurer respectively.
His musical association with the area began at the age of nine as a choirboy at St Mary’s and he went on to perform as a soloist at other churches and concerts in the area as well as at the Concordia Theatre.
A member of several choirs, he has been chairman of Smarts for the past six years.
Mr Worley said: “Hinckley Music Club was founded in 1963 by piano teacher Marjorie King as a platform for promising young musicians to showcase their talents.
“Many of these early performers went on to have national and international careers and their continued association with the club contributed to its success.
“Today, the club continues to flourish, providing the people of Hinckley and surrounding area the opportunity to enjoy live performances of classical music.
“It holds a unique position and reputation in the area and offers up to six concerts a year.”
Recent performances have come from the Oxford Bach Soloists and from Leicester University Chamber Choir.
Mr Worley added: “I am looking forward to the challenge of organising two separate concert series and hope Hinckley audiences will continue to support live music in Hinckley.”
