WADE ON WATER

- with Richard Wade

IT’S been another poor week for local anglers as the constant change in temperatures has caused venues to be iced over one day then clear the next.

Another good turn out for Maynes Lakes’ midweek open found the lakes ice free, but full of extra dirty water from the recent heavy rain.

Despite this Colin Bent landed the day’s top catch with a more than respectable 39lb 15oz catch caught on pole fished bread punch.

Result; Pool One, section one; Bob Sear 21lb 9oz from peg 26. Section Two; Colin Bent from peg 41. Pool Two, section three; Paul Reynolds 11lb 9ozs from peg 3. Section four; John Baughan 6lb 5ozs from peg 12.

Similar conditions greeted anglers fishing Lychgate Fisheries’ Wednesday Open, and again one angler, Ian Shirley, finished well clear of the rest.

Fishing peg 58 Ian caught four carp on legered bread and one on the pole, to weigh 30lb 12ozs. Terry Brindley finished second with 18lb 2ozs on pole fished pellet from peg 7. Robert Orton came third with 13lb 8ozs while Suzi Smith was fourth with 12lb 8ozs.

Barwell’s Colin Saunders enjoyed a bumper four hour Plough A/s contest on the River Avon at Ryton. On a crisp frosty morning Colin landed 13 nice chub for a winning 35lb 2oz catch. Mark Chinn came second with 12lb 4ozs while Vince Kingham finished third with 6lb 8ozs.

It was hard going at Higham Lane for the Thursday Open as Kev Milne took the honours for the second week, drawn on peg 11, Kev needed just two fish to win with 15lb 7ozs. Dave Ale caught three fish from peg 13 to take second place with 14lb 11ozs. Graham Beckworth came third with 12lb 9ozs.

Dave Cleaver won Mill on the Soar’s Tuesday Open for the second successive week. Drawn on peg 8 Dave pole fished pellet to catch 17lb 3ozs of small bream. Pete White also repeated last week’s “success”, finishing second again, with a 14lb 14oz catch of roach and bream. Third placed Mick Linnett included one of the few carp caught in his net of bream to finish with 10lb 9ozs.

Anglers had to break ice before the start of Shackerstone’s Sunday Open match.

Pegged along the Woodside length, Jock Nicholson took the honours, landing four perch to weigh 13ozs. Adie Holland caught roach and perch to take second place with 10ozs. Doug Dimbleby caught 15 small roach to take third place with 8ozs.

With half the lake iced over, Saturday’s Higham Lane Open was always going to be hard. Winner Chris Waite caught five fish from peg 9 to finish well clear with 30lb 7ozs. Mick Linnett was second with 16lb 11ozs with Dave Hurlston third with 9lb 7ozs.

Brookfield’s first open match for a while proved to be disappointing, with anglers having to break ice before the start. The carp refused to feed and only a few small fish were caught.

Top catch was made by Stu Campton with just 2lb. Runner Up Ray Lewis weighed 1lb 9ozs. Next match will be fished on February 5, draw 9am.
