A PEDESTRIAN has suffered serious injuries in a late night hit-and-run crash in Barwell.

The man, who was on foot, was involved in a collision with a silver coloured car on Kirkby Road at 10.30pm on Saturday.

He was taken to hospital and remains in a serious condition, Leicestershire Police said.

The vehicle failed to stop at the scene and was later found burnt out in a farm track off Kirkby Road by a resident who lives nearby.

The villager, who dialled 999, said: “I live about 100 yards away and at about 11.20pm, I heard a bang, a low percussive explosion like a fuel tank going up.

“It’s less than a mile out of Barwell so whoever did it could easily walk back into the village. Although the farm track they drove up is designated as having vehicular access, it’s full of deep ruts - even 4X4s struggle to get down it.

“I don’t know if they thought it would lead them to another road.

“The car’s burnt out and is a total wreck, it’s hard to tell from what’s left what make and model it is. It’s not uncommon to have cars burned out round here.”

Another resident added: “We heard there was a hit and run. I don’t know much about it. All we know is the road was cordoned off by police and ambulance.”

Police arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of drink driving and causing GBH on Sunday.

He was bailed pending further enquiries on Monday.

A force spokesman said: “A 22-year-old man has been bailed following a collision in Barwell.

“Officers were called to Kirkby Road at about 10.30pm on Saturday January 21.

“A man sustained serious injuries in the collision and was taken to hospital.

“He remains in hospital in a stable condition. Two cars were also damaged in the collision.

“The vehicle, a silver coloured car, failed to stop at the scene but was later found burnt out several miles away in the same street.

“The man was arrested on suspicion of GBH and drink driving and has been bailed pending further enquiries.”
