Canaries flying high

-

BARWELL cruised to a comfortable victory over Ashton United with an excellent firsthalf performance at Kirkby Road.

The Canaries found the net three times before the break, which helped take their unbeaten run in the league to six.

oals for Luke Barlone, Brady Hickey, Callum Ball and Declan Towers sealed a victory that moves the side to within six points of the playoff places.

It took just six minutes for the hosts to break the deadlock. Striker Barlone scored for a second match in a row, rising the highest to head home an Alex Tomkinson cross at the far post to guide Jimmy Ginnelly’s side into an early lead.

Barwell continued to dominate the opening exchanges before captain Hickey doubled their advantage midway through the half.

Skipper Hickey made an excellent run from midfield to nod Ball’s ball into the box past keeper Luke Pilling.

Frontman Ball went from provider to goalscorer to add a third for the home side.

After Nigel Julien’s pildriver struck Josh Stachini’s arm inside the area, the striker sent Pilling the wrong way with his spot kick to put the hosts in full control.

Poor travellers Ashton regrouped at the interval and became much more of an attacking threat in the second-half.

But Barwell found a fourth as Tomkinson’s free-kick was powerfully headed into the corner by defender Declan Towers.

The visitors, who have won just once on the road in 11 matches, found a late consolation through Lee Knight after the striker latched onto a defensive error and slotted into an empty net.

Barwell: Castle, Story (Kay), Towers, Stanley, Nisevic, Julien (Smith-Varnam), Hildreth, Hickey, Tomkinson, Ball, Barlone (Baldwin). Subs not used: Ballinger, Hadland.
