New funds for abuse victim groups
THREE organisations working with victims of sexual abuse and violence have been given a £27,000 cash boost from Leicestershire’s Police and Crime Commissioner.
Lord Willy Bach announced £9,000 each will be given to First Step, Leicester Rape Crisis and The Quetzal Project after visiting the support groups as part of the national Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Week, which ended on February 10.
Mr Bach said the money is part of his new crime plan which aims to help vulnerable people and victims.
He said: “These organisations offer a range of appropriate support and advice to survivors which I know makes a real difference.
“I’ve visited each organisation to see for myself how they help survivors and it’s clear to me that their support can be a gateway to recovery for those who all too often battle against feelings of isolation and helplessness.
“I’ve been clear that I intend to help vulnerable people and victims of crime and I’m pleased to be able to provide such tangible support.
“My hope is that victims will break their silence and seek the support they need.”
First Step, based in Leicester, aims to help male victims of sexual abuse begin the road to recovery and feel less isolated through counselling and emo- tional support services.
Leicester Rape Crisis provides a range of counselling and advice to women and young victims of sexual abuse.
The Quetzal Project is a small charity which specialises in working with women who have been sexually abused as children. Last year demand for Quetzal’s support increased by 80% and it is the only organisation in the county to offer specialist historical sexual abuse counselling.
