Bid in to expand Islamic centre
ACCOMMODATION for people studying at the Islamic Foundation Centre in Markfield could be increased if planners agree to a new design bid.
Agents for the organisation have submitted proposals to subdivide and convert the building into four self-contained flats.
The conference centre on Ratby Lane already has two flats on the ground floor but is in need of further overnight accommodation on campus.
Any works would take place within the fabric of the building with only limited impact on its original external character.
All flats would have separate access with one studio created from an existing store, kitchen and toilet block and conversion of existing rooms and stores for a first floor flat.
Malik Enterprises is the agent behind the planning application and has supported the submission by saying: “My client is committed to creating high quality accommodation for its residents and visitors, which will be secure and safe for people of all ages. This development will create a highly energy efficient development, intended to utilise energy as efficiently as possible, through materials, heating sources, high insulation etc.”
The Islamic Foundation was established in 1973, specialising research, education and publication to further engagement and partnership between the Muslim community and wider society.
The application will be decided at committee at a later date or through delegated officer powers.
