Flipping good offer on Shrove Tuesday

-

PANCAKES will be given away in Earl Shilton on Shrove Tuesday.

A team from the town’s parish church of St Simon and St Jude and Earl Shilton Methodist Church will be cooking up hot treats outside the town council offices on Wood Street next Tuesday, February 28, to give away to passers-by between 8am and 11am.

The offer is part of a diocese-wide Great Pancake Giveaway, which will see the Bishop of Leicester, the Rt Rev Martyn Snow, among senior clergy taking part in similar cook-ups across the county.

Earl Shilton’s pancake giveaway will coincide with the town’s farmers’ market, so is expected to draw a crowd.

Everyone who takes a pancake will also be offered a postcard inviting them to reflect on and be thankful for the good things in their lives.

Rebecca Castle, wife of St Simon and St Jude minister the Rev Martin Castle, who will be one of the pancakeserving team, said: “It’s rare that we have the opportunity to tell people we are thankful for what we have, for our families, our homes, food on the table, peace in our country, and this is simply a way to show that as Christians we want to thank God for these things.”

In the Christian calendar, Shrove Tuesday is celebrated as the last day before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday.

Lent is seen as a time of fasting and reflection in preparation for Easter, the most important festival in the Christian calendar, which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus three days after his crucifixion, which is marked on Good Friday.
