Boxers clash in ring at tournament

-

BOXERS from across the country went head to head in a tournament hosted by Heart of England and Earl Shilton Boxing Club in Hinckley.

Callum Blockley did the hosts proud by being named a popular points winner at the former Greene King Stadium.

The 21-year-old southpaw handed Levi Chandler (Bell Green) two counts in the last round of their welterweight contest to seal a unanimous points win.

There was a good win for Earl Shilton clubmate Bradie Perkins.

He outpointed Kenan Wingfield (Leicester Unity) in the best bout of the night.

Perkins boxed well in the opener and Wingfield surged back in the second to set up a decisive last round.

Perkins clinched the victory with a big final 30 seconds, unloading combinations to win the round – and the bout.

CYP champion Tyler Rivers dropped a razor-thin split decision to Johnny Dunne (Box Clever), while there were wins for Sean Bruce and Marcus Armstrong on their comebacks.

Both had been out for four years and returned with unanimous points wins.

Bruce dominated the opening two rounds against Dillon Rhattu (Wednesbury), while Armstrong took a bit longer to shake off the rust against Thomas Dunderdale (Skegness) and rallied after taking a standing count in the last to win on points.

John Dowd took just 30 seconds to win his competitive debut, ploughing straight through Edwards (Wednesbury).

John Connors outboxed Keegan Hobson (Exhall), and Jack Johnson held on for a split decision win over Harrison Cutler (Donnington).

Andy Wilshire outpointed Corey Price (Wednesbury) after a ferocious scrap, while Heart of England’s Adam Richards was on the wrong end of a controversial split points verdict against Sam Spooner (Bulwell Hall).

Coach Nick Griffin described 12-year-old Rimell Taylor as “punch perfect” following his points win over Teymour Aslam (St Francis).

In a youth bout, Zenith Shah hustled and bustled his way to a split points win over Stephen Glover (Genesis).

Sileby Boxing Academy youth boxer Callum Heagney grabbed a split decision win over Minaaz Gurung (Boxing Clever) after a good bout.

Heagney kept the pressure on from first bell to last to get the verdict.
