Brame book will help museum appeal

-

VICTORIAN author, Hinckley-born Charlotte Brame, was the subject of a talk by town historian Greg Drozdz to Hinckley Family History Society.

He was accompanied by Brame’s great-greatgreat niece Debby McNally with whom, along with Graham Law, he produced the book Charlotte M Brame (1836 - 1834) Towards a Primary Bibliography.

The 158-page volume, priced at £4, is available from Hinckley and District Museum on Lower Bond Street where sales throughout the summer will raise money for the museum’s extension fund.

Born in 1836, Charlotte married jeweller Philip Brame in 1863 and spent time in London before returning to Hinckley in the late 1870s to bring up their family.

A writer of romantic fiction, her most famous novel Dora Thorne was serialised in a London magazine.

She continued to write for such periodicals, some of which published some of her work posthumously, following her death in 1884 at the age of 48.

A blue plaque honours her home in Castle Street and a memorial marks her grave in Hinckley’s Ashby Road cemetery.

Hinckley Family History Society will next meet on Thursday April 6, from 7pm for 7.30pm at St John’s Church on Coventry Road, Hinckley, for a presentation on the development of historical Wigston.

Non-members are welcome and refreshments will be available.
