Schoolmates watch as student gets the snip
A TEENAGER has had her long locks chopped for charity in a move inspired by her West End idol.
Fifteen-year-old Kyla Burton, a student at Dixie Grammar School in Market Bosworth, had 10 inches of her hair snipped off in front of fellow pupils, to help raise awareness of a special children’s cause.
Her dark tresses will be donated to the Little Princess Trust to make a realhair wig for a child undergoing cancer treatment.
Year 10 student Kyla had spent four years waiting for her hair to grow to the required length before being able to make her donation, inspired by a similar act by West End actor Carrie Hope Fletcher, a former star of the London production of Les Miserables.
Her very public haircut was carried out by stylist Dean Goodwin-Evans from Market Bosworth salon Lily Mabel, as she sat on the stage of the school hall watched by scores of fellow students.
The school then held a fundraising non-uniform day to add to money raised by Kyla’s family and friends in support of the Little Princess Trust, taking the total to £1,200.
Kyla said: “I’m really excited to be able to part of such an amazing charity.
“The wigs they provide have a huge impact on the lives of children who need all the support they can get, give them confidence and help them feel good about themselves.”
To be suitable for the charity’s use, Kyla’s hair had to be cut following strict guidelines.
It will be added to around five other similar donations to make one wig.
Each hairpiece costs around £250 to produce but is given to a young patient free of charge.
Being real, the hair can be styled and straightened by the wearer almost as if it was their own.
