Table Tennis: New competition gets thumbs up from Hinckley players
TEAMS in the Hinckley League have welcomed a new handicap competition, namely the Team Challenge Cup.
Each team receives a handicap level based on their nominated players. A single game between two players is played up to 31 points. No doubles are played.
In the preliminary round of matches there were a couple of close games.
The match between Barlestone B and C teams went all the way with Barlestone C snatching victory by five games to four.
Dave Scraggs (eight) won a close game with Will Baggott by 31 points to 29.
The final score of 4-5 saw Barlestone C go through to the first round.
George Ward E overcame the experienced Queen’s C team by games to three.
Dave Richardson ( GW E) winning his three in style while Alana Richardson ( GW E) had a very good win over Dave Topliss 31-24.
Edward Brown (GW E) won two if his games to put George Ward E into the next round.
Nalgo collected a fine win over Hugglescote Rams by five games to six one.
Both Kevin Edwards and Pete White (Nalgo) won two apiece.
The first round draw sees GW B v Cat A, RE Studios 2 v Hit’n’Hope, GW E v Cat F, Cat G v Barlestone A, GW C v Goons, Nalgo V GW A, Barlestone C v Queen’s B, Cat E v GW D.
All matches to be played week starting March 20.
In Division 1 Barlestone A secured a good win over Hugglescote Rams by eight sets to two.
Adam Pettitt being unbeaten but being take close by Barry Taylor in a five game set Pettitt winning it 11-8 in the fifth.
Barlestone continued their good form in their next match despatching RE Studios by seven sets to three.
Charlie Bateman was undefeated for Barlestone.
Cat B beat Queen’s C by seven sets to three with Steve unbeaten.
They followed this result with another victory this time over Nalgo by six sets to four.
Goons demolished Cat A by 10sts to 0 to continue their drive for the title, but in their next match were surprisingly held to a draw by Hugglescote Rams.
Goons led by five sets to two at one point before Phil Jones (Rams) inflict- Bessant ed only the second loss of the season on Lucky Obi (Goons). John Lenton (Rams) then beat Barry Robinson(Goons) to bring the score to 5-4 in Goons favour before Jones and Lenton (Rams) snatched the draw in a five match doubles.
Other results:- GW A 6–4 RE Studios 1; Nalgo 2–8 G Ward B; Barlestone B 1–9 GW A; and Cat A 9–1 Cat B.
